I have an 18' fiberglass jetboat with a 403 Olds engine. It will run in about 6" - 8" of water when it's up on plane, however, a pump will pull water and everything else including vegetation, sticks and rocks from about 4 or 5 feet below the intake.

Like Dabs said, you'd be stopping to clear the intake and impeller every couple of feet.

Watch a video of those guys that run aluminum jets in rivers in Canada. They're running in about 2" of water at times, but they're also running 30mph plus.
