Considering the net $$$ you're going lose trading vehicles you could drive the one you have for at least another 5 years and come out further ahead.

Krazy,
I bought one 9,000 miles ago, and the thing gets crappy fuel mileage, 12-13 around town, and up to 15-16 highway....that is, unless I cruise on the Freeway, DOWNHILL, at under 65, then it is pretty dang impressive! But who can do that consistantly....forkin' OTHER traffic will run yer azz over out here... It's a 4X Dually, and I s'pose that don't help much neither!!!
My other 4X has a Hemi, and that is even worse, around 11 in town, and up to 16 when the cruise is set, and I stay under 65,again, DOWNHILL---Whoop-dee-forkin'-do!
I was gonna "chip" the Diesel rig, but I had a BIG HEADED Diesel Guru tell me not to bother, it weren't gonna help much, plus it could cause tranny problems on the automatic---So I dunno what to do....but both them trucks are awful thirsty all the time is what I DO know!
I think maybe if you get a 2-wheel drive, lightweight truck, ya might could do alright on fuel consumption....but if ya get one of those, why get a truck anyway????

Mine gets an "impressive" 16 or 17 HWY at 80 mph. However, it will get that milage light or with 2000 lbs in the back. Over all, they suck. Rough riding, clattering, fuel sucking garbage is what they are. The only way to come out is if somthing is strapped to the back every mile you drive. Or you can drive one simply because you can. B

How bout a gasser with a 3.55 gear instead of a 3.73 (20" wheels)???
Is that sumbitch gonna be able to pull a 3,000lb trailer down the road worth a dam?

I wouldn't trade my diesel for another gas truck for anything. It's a truck.....it's supposed to be rough riding, smelly, loud, and obnoxious. I get about 17 combined city and hwy....I can get over 20 if I keep it around 65 on the highway....but I don't....Like DosKnucklehead said....gas mileage is the same whether you're empty or pulling your house.
Personally, I like nothing better then to piss off the neighbors and especially other hunters at a hotel when I warm it up in the morning.

My Dodge will do 15 in town and can get @18 on the highway if I keep my foot off the peddle. That is on 1 ton dually. I love my diesel and I will never replace it with a gasser!
I had a chevy 350 and it would never do better than 15 and 11.

Are those 3.55's coupled to a 5.4???? If so that damn engine has a real chitty torque curve. It'll pull a stump out the ground, but won't pass a blue hair @ 45 mph while your towing your boat. Been there done that.
I would stay with the gas, it is by far the cheapest cost per operating hour over the diesel. To answer your question, no it wont tow worth a chit...but you will be happier with your checking account in the end. B.

I wouldn't trade my diesel either but it will be better when the fuel stations put out a vasoline jar by the pump to make filling easier. I am starting to get pretty sore from the $.40-$.50/gal. difference diesel over gas, forking they are giving us. Prolly won't get any better til after harvest.

I did the math and if you get 2mpg better performance with a diesel over a gasser that $.36 per gallon difference between gas and diesel fuel cancel each other.
If they ever get over forkin everybody over that dam additive the EPA requires in low sulfur diesel...then maybe the price at the pump will even out and make it more economical to run diesel.

Check this chit out.
If Mercedes can build a diesel car to get this kind of performance....why in the hell cant GM, Ford or Dodge?

Krazy, you need to look at the other factors other than just fuel economy. Like engine life, general maintenance, and resale value. Lets take the Cummins 5.9 for example, 500K expected life before reduild, use syn. oil and do oil changes every 10k-20k pending an oil analysis. Sorry for the rant, but i wont be going back to a gasser any day soon. I get 18-20 around town and about 23 on the hwy doin 75-80. Its gets even better if you dont have a heavy foot like i do. And performance mods do increase fuel economy.

I drove from Slidell, LA to Perryvile, MO on a tank of fuel empty driving Mach 1 in a 3/4 ton diesel. It took $98.00 to fill the truck. Buddy took the same trip and he filled up in Memphis and in Perryville...bout $85 each fill. I believe I'm ahead in fuel cost.
I'll take my stump yanking, rattlin, 19.5 mpg average on my 1 ton diesel anyday over a toy that runs on gas. Running 65 with my chip in it its closer to 23.....and at 90 mph its closer to 16mpg.
I've been burning diesel trucks for 9 years and I'll never own another gas truck. PERIOD. The fuel/gas cost is about the same, but the diesel gets better milage, tows more, and runs forever.
Of course what do I know. I own a four stroke boat motor that I'm still not ahead with at $3.15/gallon premium fuel.

No, because they have had a ton of problems. Trust you me, if I had an extra 10 grand laying around I would have my cummins in a ford, so I make due without.

With the 6.0 Chev, you can pass anything in the world, except a gas station.

Oh yeah....almost forgot until someone reminded me....I drove my 1999 diesel into the damn ground....just drove it and forgot it except for changing the oil......even lit a stick of dynomite in the cab at 120 mph...of course, the inbred Nodak bastard screamed like a girl until I threw it out....but that's a minor detail.
Sold it with 146,000 miles on it for $18,000 in 2005.....book was $18,700. Try that with your gas truck.
And before Dos Gris posts up something completely ridiculous and equally stupid about how much I paid for it origionally compared to what I could have bought and sold a gas truck for....I did the math at the time in order to figure out if a diesel was worth it again.....I came out over $5000.00 ahead.
