...this time by a couple years apparently.
Never had any experience with woodworking other than my freshman year in high school which was about 30 years ago.
But, the 16 year old aint gonna be around the house but for a couple more years and he bought a small lathe and set it up in the basement to make pens and bottle stops and small items like that. I decided to spend time with him I would take it up too but the pens and bottle stops just didn't interest me...so, we decided a few weeks ago we would experiment with some calls.
I will say it is an addictive hobby for sure. Lots of chunks of wood ended up in the trash trying to get it figured out and, although it still isn't mastered, it has come a long ways.
Here is a pick of some of the first generation.
Then I came upon some old poly inserts for free and turned them into these -
These are the last two I just finished up -
Diamondwood double reed duck with freehand toneboard
Hedge shortreed goose -
Never plan on being a big named call maker but it is a fun hobby none the less and provides a platform to spend time one of the boys.

I was not in charge of the ADT Nascar winnings - but I am sure yours is in the mail. Keep looking everyday. I seemed to have lost the tracking number though

They are coming along pretty nicely on sound....lots of inserts went into the "send to bubba" pile getting there but it is a fine tuning process.
The poly ones are easy - cut reeds, place in insert and tune. The custom cut inserts are the ones that took a bit longer to get there.
They are now in 9 States scattered around the Country.

That is some fabulous looking work there Rick... and BEST of all for me is... the father-son factor...
VERY koooooo brotha!!!!
Call me traditionalist, but I still like the good ole walnut ones the best... When I was a 12-year-old "field tester" (This was BEFORE the prostaffer craze hit, by about 25 years) for Bill Harper... he made me a heart burlwood walnut goose call that I loved... it and several cheaper calls and about 15 goose bands were stolen at Sumner WGF in 73... loved that call.... it was gorgeous.
Anyway, mighty good to see a Dad who purposely makes time for his sons. Admire ya a lot, dude!

Dabs the call sounds so good that the eldest son stole it! He said he thinks it sounds as good, if not better, then his acrylic Echo. He loved it as soon as he saw it and it went right on his lanyard! Great job man! Thanks again!
