44 and 44 2 games back from the Cubs
Good thing they are in the NL Central
If they were in the NL West they would be 15-16 back
Nl East they would be 10-11 back
right now Baseball Reference give the Birds a 15% chance at the playoffs and 0.9% of winning the World Series
They say Molina is still having a problem with his thumb Carpenter's back is cranky Hick's is gone for the rest of the season Ozuna out for an undetermined time Gyrko same as Ozuna
12th in OPS (11th in most other categories re hitting)
Hasn't been pretty but the Team ERA is 4.14 ( 4th in the NL)
Team Fielding is .988 for 2nd in the NL
Carpenter once said you are what your baseball card says you are
What do you make outta of the Birds 1st half?
Do you think lightning will strike like it did last year and the Birds go on a tear or will they be playing golf at the end of September?

I will answer each of these in mid-August...
For now, I'm a little bored with MLB. Not sure if it is in part due to the extended intensity and high from the Blues run or baseball is just getting boring. I think it is both. Baseball is getting boring with launch angles and exit velocity being the main topic of conversations and players considered good, batting .235 but hitting 40+ HR's a year. That makes for some boring baseball to watch. How many games have the Cards played with 5-6 hits or less? Too many! I am impressed with the improvement in fielding and fundamentals. At least they are now up to varsity high school levels...
My prediction is they will play better in the 2nd half. At a minimum, Goldschmidt and Carpenter will come around offensively and we'll probably see more of Munoz (I hope). But there is no way the Brewers and Cubs will both continue to play as poorly as they have. I hope I'm wrong but I can't see the Cardinals winning this division unless they pick up a top tier starter or two. And if Wacha starts one more game, I think I will have to consider everyone from the pitching coach to the owner, insane!!
Go Blues!!

I can assure you it will be played when the banner is raised.
It should then be retired, brought out for this team and year only on special occasions.
And btw, can't wait to see what tickets go for on the day that banner gets raised.

Celebration by Kool & The Gang was 1982. You can scarcely go to a wedding reception or Fast Eddies and not hear that song. Heck, it is even a regular on some radio stations in town. Don't count on Gloria going away anytime soon... For whatever reason, St. Louisans seem to latch on to their victory anthems and not let go...

Here's the $64,000 question for today. Actually, two of them:
Why is Harrison Bader still in STL? He needs to be in Memphis figuring out how to hit better than .150. He is a great CF'er but it is utterly absurd to keep sending him up to the plate.
If HB has to be here, why is he batting in the bottom of the 7th, with runners on 1st & 3rd and no outs and Jose Martinez available on the bench? He was 1 for 14, in his last at bats with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs. That's a cool .071 batting average. WTF is Schildt doing?!?!?!? Someone needs to look into his finances and see if he had a bet on the game last night. That is the only thing that makes any sense...
These games are hard enough to win. They get even harder when obviously dumb decisions are made...

Waino should only be allowed to pitch at home moving forward. Carlos Martinez needs 2 days rest before pitching. Carpenter needs to stay wherever he is. Great come back win, but it was the Reds.

Martinez is chit on one days rest. Case in point........Monday’s nights game. 4 run lead from the Grand Slam and he almost blows the game in the 10th. Is MM secretly giving Schlitz beer some pointers???

When your starters can't go more than 3 or 4 innings on the road, the entire BP is gassed. I'm not sure they will be worth a chit the last month on the season. They blew out Hicks' arm. I suspect Martinez will be back on the shelf soon, with some arm issue.
The issue seems to be starting pitchers that can go 6 or 7 innings with some degree of consistency at home and on the road. Getting a solid starter in a trade is going to cost them a prospect or two and/or a MLB ready player or two. And I'm not talking about teams taking from the crap heap. They're going to have to give up someone like O'Neill or Tommy Edmand or Munoz...

Well if we had a GM worth a chit, he could see we needednstarting pitching in the offseason...........or at the start of the season, and he would have for off his ass to get a quality starter

Dawg, nearly every pundit that writes about baseball was saying the Cardinals pitching staff was as good as any in the NL. I'm all for criticizing Mo when it is due but they were in pretty darn good shape at the start of the season. Losing 2 of your top 4 starters is a hit most teams would reel from. Having Mikolas become the Jekyl & Hyde of starting pitchers hasn't helped either.
I'll be critical if they don't land some pitching help by the deadline but I'm not goign to throw him under the bus for the off-season pitching decisions. I'll save that for signing Carpenter to an extension...
I'm curious what will happen when Carp gets back. How do you justify inserting him into the line-up over Edmand or Munoz?

Yeah, his attire with bowties and scarfs doesn't exactly scream baseball guy. The way he talks doesn't help either. But I suspect if the Cards let hm go, there will be a dozen teams that will sign him up as their GM or in some significant role.
