Burnin' through the bird food the last few weeks... I should have just hit the Coop for the sunflower seeds at the rate they are eating 'em up...
Sure seems like a big year for Cardinals. Not sure what that is all about...

Suckers have been killing our feeders. I think the wife has 6 that she makes sure I keep full. The apple tree has had 14 Cardinals in it at one time with each feeder full of them. I got whole peanuts at a peanut farm in Oklahoma. Damn blue jays destroy the peanuts. We have gone through 50 pounds so be November, but the peanuts keeps them away from the other feeders. 11 deer at the feeder one day and we saw 13 long beards stroll through the yard a couple weeks ago. All the bucks but a couple have dropped already.

You'll find a bunch of those peanuts this Spring. In potted plants, tree crotches, wedged against roots, and under loose bark.
The jay is all about the stash.

I had a buddy named Jay that always had a pretty good stash, if I recall. Maybe something in the name...

Did a little extra feeding on the ground around the feeders Saturday/Sunday and it looks like something from a National Geographic special. I must have 75 birds eating there. And 25+ cardinals at any given time. The star of the show is a brown thrasher, tearing up the ground under the crab apple tree, looking for insects I guess. He doesn't seem to interested in the bird food. But he sure can get through the snow and dirt with that big bill and make a forkin' mess.
Out of town for 3-4 days. I suspect everything will be depleted when I get back. Pretty sure the wife isn't going out there to feed 'em... 
I'm hoping this is the last cold snap. The last trip for bird foods was $50+. Not sure I get that much enjoyment out of them...

I got one word for ya: Grandkids! We have a bird book and binoculars by the window and they love watching the birds and trying to identify them. Of course I go all Cliff Clavin on them and make up all sorts of facts for them to absorb. Hopefully they don’t take too much of it to school. I fear the teachers may challenge some of my “facts”...
And I am pretty content sitting by that same window with a glass of the beverage of the day (Jameson Black Barrel yesterday afternoon). After flipping though 786 channels on Direct TV, I have come to the conclusion that watching birds is much more therapeutic. And $50, twice a year is pretty cheap for therapy...

I'll buy a big bag of sunflower seeds for 20 bucks. It prolly lasts close to two months,and I enjoy seeing all the different species filling their craws.
I'd watch them over hockey, baseball, football, golf, soccer,or germinating grass seed.

I hung some hummingbird feeders after reading all the BS you guys put up.
In the end.....I wouldn't care if I went out on my deck and there was 100 dead hummingbirds.

I had my hummingbird feeders wrapped in electric pipe tape, to keep the nectar from freezing, but I had to take them down because the mountain lions were tearing up my deck railing trying to climb to the feeders.
