Well, we almost have our Round of 16 settled, so it is time to make predictions.
My head says Brazil or Spain but I'm going to pick Belgium. They've looked solid so far and play a game that can compete with any style of play.
If Portugal had anything to support Ronaldo, I'd pick them. But I don't see the depth behind him. Same with Argentina and Messi. Who knows, maybe they'll step up and support their stars. If so, either could win it all.
Having a blast watching Germany melt down over their early exit. Sort of like when the Yankees don't win here in the States.
Find a good pub that shows the game, put down a few pints and enjoy the next few weeks. After all, it is the most popular sport on the planet!!

After following the threads on this forum I think Tiger Woods is probably due. I think I'll go with him for the cup.

Portugal (Ronaldo) and Argentina (Messi) both knocked out in round 1 for the exact reasons predicted. They simply don't have the depth needed to support their superstars.
Spain gets knocked out on PK's. Maybe firing your coach 24 hours before the start of the World Cup wasn't such a good idea...
Still betting on Brazil or Belgium. It sucks they have to play each other in the quarterfinals. That game should have been in the finals or at least the semi's. The other side may very well send England to the finals. Let's hope not. The Brits will be unbearable for years to come, should they win...

Watching people play poker on TV.. When the fork did that become a sport?

OK, here we go. I picked Belgium from the start and will stick with that. However, any of the 4 remaining can win this thing. If I had to put money down today, I'd put it on France. They are equally skilled but have a little more speed and a really good counter-attack. But Belgium can beat them and need them to, so I can be right...
I hope I'm wrong but England should beat Croatia. They are a little stronger and a little more rested, especially after Croatia's OT game. Still pulling hard for Croatia.
Unfortunately, I'll be on a flight during most of the game today. Hopefully, it will be available on the flight...

Well, you win some and lose some. I didn't get Belgium but Croatia beating England is so sweet. I really didn't want to have to listen to any Brit gloating about a WC Championship... And a little icing on the cake, I got to watch the whole game from my hotel room.
As for the finals, you gotta pull for the underdog, Croatia. But the odds are long. France is really good and Croatia has now played two OT games in a row. But Croatia has some smokin' hot fans and that has to count for something...
Sunday viewing is a must!!

A guy from STL is in Vegas right now, has made it to like the final 26 in a tournament, at this point he is guaranteed $300,000. There is a lot of money floating around in poker....

A few... And they are quite full of themselves this year with regard to their soccer / futbol team. Not only am I glad they lost, I want Belgium to stomp them soundly in the 3rd place game, on Saturday. I also have a few friends in Scotland and Ireland that mostly hate England, so I like to support them too...

You came out of the closet with your soccer fandom some time ago. No great surprise here...
I know where you'll be Sunday. You'll be in the AC, with remote in hand, toggling back-and-forth between soccer and the Golf Channel...

Welp, Belgium did their job...
Now we need Croatia to step up and pull off a "Miracle on the pitch." Croatia has been coming from behind a lot in these games but that can't happen here. If they get behind against France, they are going to lose. France is far better than any team they have played and will not allow a comeback. They need to hold France in check for the first 15-30 mins and then take advantage of counter-attacks and set pieces on corners and free kicks. They also need a break or two. Maybe a call in the box for a PK or a red card that puts France down a player. Going to be a tough task to beat 'em but I will watch, in hopes of that miracle...

France showed why they were the heavy favorites in this game. Croatia has talent and showed flashes but did not have the horses to run with France for 90 minutes.

It wasn't meant to be. France and their band of north African "Frenchmen" were simply too much for the Croatians. Oh well, France was the better team and that is how it goes. Croatia was the mouse that roared and represented themselves quite well throughout.
Overall, a fantastic World Cup and more parity than we have ever seen on that stage. Germany getting booted in round play, Brazil out in the Quarters, and the list goes on...
Now, if only the USA Men's National team could get their chit together and find a few dozen premier players out of the 375+ million people here... Maybe when the CTE thing makes football obsolete, they'll increase the size of the talent pool they're drawing from.
We'll revisit all of this in 2022.
