I am taking a kid who lost his dad to cancer. We went out last Saturday morning to listen. To say the woods are bare would be an understatement. No leaves on the trees, no foliage, not much cover. Heck, I think the ticks are still asleep. I may have to use a ground blind for the first time ever.
Any of you hands taking a yute?

Cody's last official youth hunt ever. Hard to believe he will be 16 in just a few weeks. Had 3 birds all grouped up with some hens. Very vocal in the tree and gobbled good on the ground until the hens moved in. Once that happened, I had to cut and hit them hard to get them to make a sound. Ended up seeing them through all the trees a couple hundred yards away. Finally talked one into leaving the group and heading our way. Took close to 45 minutes for him to get in on us. I figured he would pop out of the creek straight at us, since he was walking to us that way. Instead he hit the creek and circled in on us. Showed up 20 yards away with his head low. A couple soft yelps got him to look up to take a load of 2" #'5's to the face. Great hunt. Took until 8:20 to get him in. Great start to the MOMO season.

Late Sunday afternoon Garner whacked a jake. Got 4 of them to come in and he shot it prone at 8 yards. He is 10 and this was his 2nd bird.

Nice pictures guys! Time flies....
I was really looking forward to taking Raymond again this year. Instead, we had to make a trip to New Jersey last weekend because Raymond wanted to watch the WWE Wrestlemania XXIX. I would have normally tried to talk him out of it, but Brutus the Barber Beefcake was on location giving autographs so it was just too hard to pass up.

Welp, I've taken the kid 4 times now and he's missed twice. I'm starting to rethink this little charity project. If it weren't for having the kid along, I would have been tagged out and looking for mushrooms and/or crappie fishun' on my weekends.
The first miss wasn't so bad. He actuallt rolled it and it got up and flew into a barbed-wire fence. He left about half his breat feathers and his beard on the top strand. I figured we would find him on the other side. After an hour of looking under every cedar tree, brush pile and ditch, no luck. A few hours later I went back to look agian and found him on the ground about 5 feet from the woods. He was clearly hurt and without a beard. As soon as he saw us, he ran into the woods. Another 1/2 hour of searching, no luck. Coyote food I would guess...
Second bird was a clean miss at 20 yards. Has three birds, all 2 year-olds surrounding the decoys and he just couldn;t get it done.
Both were during the regular season. I could have whacked 'em and been done by now. I'm taking him one more time, next weekend. Trust me, my bead will be on any bird's head that gets close and we'll shoot at the same time (1,2,3 fire!!).

Let the kid keep trying.......I'd rather watch someone else shoot a bird than me. If you are that damn hungry you need the meat, let me know. I have 5 in the freezer. Go fishing and shroom hunting after 1pm. Simple solution.

I had a bird at 10 yards today....sucker walked right out of a creek. Was walking down the creek bed gobbling his ass off. Walked out and dude shot right over it. 10 steps. After he missed it gobbled twice and then ran off as dude jacked another shell in. I couldn't believe he missed it. Having a .655 turkey choke isn't a good thing at 10 yards I guess. Bird had a nice thick beard and some good spurs. Back after him in a few days hopefully. First miss with that gun in many years. I just laughed. I'm still laughing. ITs just a bird. They make more.

It is easier to miss a bird at 10 yards than 20 yards, especially with a super full choke. That's one of the reasons I just shoot the stock, full choke in my turkey guns (Super X2 & Mossberg 835). I take far more shots inside of 30 yards than outside of 30.
