u-haul trailer hitch-any thoughts?
      #152424 - 06/12/08 06:51 AM

Daughter is moving to Fl. in a few weeks, with 3 kids (my grandkids and fishing buddies )

Called u-haul about outfitting her 04 Mits. outlander with a tow package.260$ for reciever, hitch, ball, wiring etc....then the charge for the trailer.I'd just as soon get everything all together all at once-cheaper than the dealer, but maybe someone north of KC has a better company to call?

Ryder maintains their equipment far better. I wouldn't send anyone I cared about on a trip with U-Haul stuff.
For trailer hitches check with any local camper shell dealer. They usually do that stuff, and so does any trailer/RV dealer.
If you can't get a good price that way, see what it'd cost for a Ryder truck and the deal to haul her vehicle behind it. I haven'[t done any of this in years, so I don't know what kind of prices they have on the stuff I'm talking about.

Thanks...checked today and ain't even one dealer within 45 miles....can't imagine the cost of gas of a truck and dolly vs. a hitch and trailer-thanks for the reply

I would agree on shopping around at trailer dealers and truck accessory places for hitches and wiring. When you do get a trailer, CHECK IT OVER THROROUGHLY. Check the tire pressure, shake the wheels to check for bearing play and look underneath to inspect the axle and suspension. I don't know what kind of maintenance program they have, but I have seen some real ratty U-Haul trailers.
