Went hunting out in SWKS. Had a rooster get up about 5 ft in front of me and I hit him going away about 15 ft away. It was a "cloud" of feathers Here's what one looks like after it's hit with #5's at that distance. Literally shot the sh*t out of it.

Pheasant burger
If it had been a quail it would have just been "red mist"

I bet the dog was not happy with you at all!
The boy...and about 6 others went to Russell KS last weekend on a pheasant hunt. They walked 18 miles and killed two quail..only saw three pheasants.
It was a bachelor party though - so maybe their focus wasn't the best in the world.

This was the dog's first pheasant hunt and he had to run down his first retrieve (not this one) and there wasn't a tail feather in it, after he got it caught. It was still alive when he brought it to me. He hates them now..
That sucks to hear about the boy. I've been on plenty of those trips. I think further west this year woulda been a lot better for them, but maybe Russell KS has better "bachelor" places than say Goodland, Colby, Garden City, Hays or Ulysses, KS?? (I know Dodge City doesn't have anything like that..)
Just dad and I hunting this trip, so we didn't cover a lot of ground, but we saw birds at every stop. We only hunted public ground once, and are blessed to have private ground to hunt. We easily saw 30+ birds in 2.5 days of hunting and that's a HUGE improvement over the past few yrs.
