Opener
      #264405 - 10/30/23 06:38 AM

Finally home
Probably the best opening day the club has had in the last 10 years.
Saturday 7 hunters 7 limits before 9 am

Today 3 hunters 2 limits and a mallard limit (16 total)

Old school today with feet down only except for teal and squealers which were targets of opportunity

OUTSTANDING dog work…..the training time paid off

Majority of bag both days were gray ducks, teal, woodies, sprig, greenheads and one jack.
Fella that shot the jack was tried by a jury of his peers and sentenced to KP duty for the weekend.

Hope y’all had a good opener and everyone got back to hearth and home safely

Same here Bill. As you know, not far from you, but I think the good hunts opening weekend were across the region. I’ve heard dozens of stories of limits and many of them quick limits. That tells me BK must have done better than their usual .047 ducks per man. We even heard shooting coming from that forsaken chithole (along with the usual bad calling).

Regarding the bags, we don’t have nearly the discretion you duck snobs have. Too many days in the blind where the ducks are scarce for us to be all high and mighty about shootin’ a jack or a merrrr. In fact, our bags this past 3-4 days included both, as well as a rare Ruddy (for us anyway). Mallards were only about 25-30% of our limits. We did get into some Cans and Redheads both. The Pintails are thick but they don’t ever work too well for us. We scratched out a few each day but saw hundreds. Otherwise the usual Gadwalls, a few Wigeons, a few Woodies, etc…

2nd season for my pup and she absolutely rocked it. Working from home when I’m not traveling makes it easy to work her year round. I thawed out the frozen training ducks (saved from last season) about 3-4 weeks ago and she has been jacked up ever since. She’ll still go get the bumpers but with about half the enthusiasm of the ducks. She splits time with another dog, so she’s only hunted 2 times so far. Both days were 20+ retrieves and 2-3 cripples on the banks each day. She’s showing a good nose and a serious enthusiasm for the search. Fun to watch and satisfying to see the extra time pay off…

Glad to hear your hunts were good. Looking at the forecast, it looks like the usual post-opening lull is coming up. That will be the time to fill a few limits of crappie or maybe swing the clubs. Hope the rest of your season goes well. Stay safe and make some memories!

Andy
Glad to hear y’all did well and that the pup is coming along as well as being fired up to retrieve “the real thing”.

Always a kick to watch a young dig figure it out when a bird dives or heads to the thick stuff and comes up with the bird……usually with cheers and a ton of good boy or good girl head pats etc.

Haven’t checked the duck count but was told BK HAD A 4 duck/man average for opening day……..that is nose bleed stuff for them.
The Wade & Shoot on P did real well so I was told by several sources.
Time will tell if it will hold or if the usual low numbers occur.

My Wingman got the Cannon count. 60K

I know several clubs on P have not pumped up to full pool yet. Will be interesting to see if the weather mad dash is going to be the highlight of the year or are we going to get a good flight near Vets Day….then start losing ducks and enter December Doldrums time.

Good luck…..stay safe

I miss the North Zone early week. It would have been a good one too with as many ducks pushed in Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

Hopefully some stick around and some more stop for a visit this Saturday.

I went down Tuesday and busted up a beaver dam they had made holding water from getting from one pool to another. They had it about 8” higher in our South pool than the North. I hate me a beaver.

Was wading through the corn from one pit to the other to see what the water situation looked like at it and jumped up a pair of Sandhills from the edge of the standing corn - I wasn’t expecting that to happen.

Second year in a row I’ll be without my pup….partial tear of the right CCL two weeks ago during training….surgery was Tuesday and she gets to sit in her kennel for the next 4-6 weeks.

Good to luck to all this weekend - hope you have a productive and safe weekend…also be on the lookout for a jallopy running around with Iowa license plates - word is it’s an ugly fella who wears Maui Jim sunglasses. He has been seen trespassing on quite a few marshes the last week.
