What we saw on the Mississippi today
      #241355 - 12/15/13 07:35 PM

Gazillion Canada geese moving-- most down river and parts south

Ton of ducks over Hager's Rest Lake-- they come out high and go out over the river-- where from there?......hell if I know-- between ice and other stuff---- no way to follow

Golden eyes out the wazzoo around Portage Island
along with a lot of other ducks that taste like they smell (divers)

Trumpeter Swans making a mad dash to open water they and geese and ducks have kept open between 4 pm and 15 minutes after sundown

managed to scratch a couple of greenheads and a gadwall

As always-- YMMV

WU divers do not taste bad, if they do you need to learn how to cook.

It is over for now, at least in our little hole. Heard some shooting out on the river yesterday. Gotta get mobile now. That was much more exciting prospect a few years ago...

I know that a couple thousand geese are now sitting on Watkin's Mill lake. Moved in in the last few days. Any food areas close-by ought to be good if you have permission.

Tom
I had an open river blind up north of the Stag Island group for a couple of years

Out of the 200 plus ducks I killed killed out of it-- only 1 greenhead so that meant I had plenty of bluebills and goldeneyes to experiment on.

I can attest that there is not enough milk, buttermilk, tomato sauce, vinegar, marinades both common and secret ingredient types, stroganoffs, chowders and even bacon that can make those crustacean, fish and other assorted aquatic items eating POS anywhere close to being palatable....

much less even come close to a teal, pintail, gadwall, mallard or widgeon....

regardless of being baked, fried, stewed, grilled or roasted

They are the only ducks that can make sauerkraut taste like something other than a violation against cruel and unusual punishment.

If cooking ability is based on taking a piece of crap and making it taste less like a piece of crap regardless of all steps to make it edible....

then ---

you are correct

Even the neighbor's cats refused to eat the damn things-- regardless of being cooked or just given to them raw

As always-- Your Mileage May Vary

You need to use a truck and chain to get the hide off a goldeneye.

The hide on a Ruddy duck can't be filleted off with a Samari sword.

One night in Dexter.. as they say... we filleted mallards and left the ringnecks in separate plastic bag from the mallard carcasses..

In the morning, the mallard carcasses were gone.. the ringnecks were still there.... I dont know if cats or Habib took the carcasses!
